You are what you eat. What we eat not just impacts our physical health but our mental state too. Indian food system classifies food into three categories – Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic.
The word Sattvic comes from the Sanskrit word SATTVA. Sattva is a reference to anything that is pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-giving, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise”. Food that reflects these qualities are called Sattvic.
Sattvic foods calms us. They are nourishing and promote and maintain a quiet, balance state of mind. Sattvic foods help to sharpen your intellect and give you a greater sense of empathy. Sattvic foods are vegetarian. They do not include foods derived from animals that have been harmed in any way. Sattvic foods are grown naturally and do not contain preservatives, artificial flavors, or additives.
Rajasic food are meant to stimulate the senses. They are hot spicy and salty, thus are meant to be consumed in small amounts. Tamasic food is heavy. Induces sleep. Stale food too is referred to as tamasic. Sattvic food leads you to higher states of consciousness. It is important to remember that a sattvic diet is intended to improve the mind via the body.
